Mulching Shrub beds is a great way to add uniformity to your landscape. Mulch also help prevents weeds, holds moisture, and in most cases, adds organic matter to the soil.
Since the year 2000, dyed mulch have gained in popularity. Even though dyed mulch is generally more expensive per cubic yard, many people feel its worth it since these mulch products hold there color much longer. Some dyed mulches are made from the ground-up pallets and other waste wood sources.
The most commonly used mulch is a by-product of the timber industry; “shredded” tree bark. Prior to the milling of logs, they are “de-barked” and the bark is stockpiled — this is whats known as “single shredded bark”.
Top Soil
Top soil is the upper, outermost layer of soil where most nutrients for plants are found. It has the highest concentration of organic matter and microorganisms and is where most of the earths biological soil activity occurs. This is a great all-purpose solid, designed for growing shrubs, trees and other plants that thrive in a fungal dominated environment. Plants generally concentrate their roots in and obtain most of their nutrients from topsoil.
